How to use "DEER SCENT" ???

Most everyone will develop their own way of placing their scent, the amount and when to scent to their needs. Here are a few tips that have worked well for me, and now I shall pass them on to you. My name is Tom Hilger and I have been a long time user of Orion scents, and a friend of Brad and the entire Heath family even longer.

I will show a few diagrams then explain how they work for me, and some other key information about using scents.

The wind can be your friend.
You always hear, "choose your stand by wind direction, walk up wind. Set up down wind." Hunt where you want, when you want, just have fun. If the deer don't know you're there, (scent control) a so called bad wind can work for you. Just don't over hunt an area.

Walking to your stand
Try not to touch any twigs, grass etc. I walk with my hat off to not build up heat. Walk as straight as possible to the stand. This is if your stand is already in the woods. When you get just out of your seeing distance from your stand, find something about knee high a twig, picker bush, anything. Stop and get out your Orion scent and a make-up disk (cotton material) put just about a dime size wet spot on it, and hang it. This is to cover where you may have to cross your tail (I won't put any scent on the trail at any time keep it well off to the side-don't ruin a natural thing) and a teaser to get the deer's interest when he runs across your Orion scent further down the path. Continue to your stand and now you are at your tree / or blind. Get all your gear ready to up the tree so after the main scent lay-out you can get on stand.

Diagram A
The only wind directions the deer don't catch any scent is from the north -east/ east or south east and he is up wind. That is if that big old buck is on the trail. Now that is where Tom's tips come in. An hour or so after the sun comes up a lot of times the wind changes. I get out those make-up disks and my scent and put a few good drops on a disk and toss it from up in the tree, one between me and the trail and one back the way I walked in Diagram B. This is only if nothing has been moving, if you have seen deer leave well enough alone.

Diagram C
Now this is what happens most of the time, those big boys hang down wind off the trail, and you can see just how effective this set up is for that. Another of Tom's tips notice the stand placement, how it is just around the bend in the trail. Something natural causes the deer to make that bend and I have noticed the deer prefer the outside flank, or the deer will come from the inside and walk the main trail for a short distance then flank back off. (now that's a good tip)

OK LETS GO HUNTING
Well I don't have to tell you how good a deer's nose is. The whole idea of using Orion scent is so when another deer passes down wind or close enough to wind you that the deer thinks another deer has just been through there. Deer are curious and will stop or even come to investigate.
An important factor to scent control, is just that SCENT CONTROL!!!!

The Basics - do your best to Eliminate your human order. From your human house to your human truck to maybe your human stand. The point is, if you want to disappear, don't smell like a human.....

Smokers read this I know. Don't smoke if you use scent. Several years back I smoked, and I don't know how many times I had to snuff out 'cause a deer was coming right up wind. I feel deer don't distinguish the difference between wood stove smoke, cig smoke, any smoke. When you will get BUSTED is when deer pin-point where that smoke is coming from unnaturally. I must say, I have harvested larger bucks after I quit. Use air tight containers for your buts and rub tree bark or dirt on your fingers after smoking. Saltine crackers do wonders for your breath. Use Orion scents the same as described.

Gun hunting- I double the amount of scent pods I put out and much further out lets say 50 to 70 yards out and instead of the bend in the trail I look for a bend in the terrain, or a thicket makes a turn, a bend in the swamp. To me gun season is the same as bow just on a larger scale. (Now that is a another good tip)

Even down here in the Missouri Ozarks ORION SCENTS has worked great for me. Just can't beat the real thing! Thanks Brad.
